I know i said i would not write a long post but i could not stop myself so bear with me and in as much as i would love to tell you to get a glass of chilled wine and relax and read, i wouldn’t say so. But i think you should sit down and think hard about your life.
I really don’t know where to start from. I don’t even know what I want to write about but whatever I write, I hope it turns out to be something worth reading; something that touches someone’s life.
I used to think life was all about going to school; getting good grades and being the best I could be but then I found out that life was all of that and more. I remember when mama used to make us go to church or learn how to say our prayers and ask us to read our bibles; I never knew the importance of all of that until later on when I discovered that without mama’s prayers, corrections, love and admonitions I would be nowhere.
I was just listening to something on the TV the other day and something cut my attention. The priest said: “who is Jesus to you?” and went ahead to give different answers to what most people thought Jesus was to them. I am not going to give the answers he gave because we all know who Jesus is to us, but the answer that stood out to me was that Jesus is our best friend. He went ahead to say this: “you have a best friend whom you never communicate with, who is only in your thoughts when you need something”. It struck a chord in my heart and I knew I was part of those who called Jesus my best friend but never treated him like one. I said my prayers out of sense of duty and was always in a hurry to finish up but I could spend hours reading the latest best-selling paperback novel. It was shameful to see all my faults brought out in such hideous light. The priest said prayer was an act of communicating, the kind that occurs between a father and his child, and one that is supposed to draw the child closer to his father.
We often rush our prayers but never forget to ask God for the numerous things we want and most times forget to thank Him for the ones he has provided for us already. God has promised to provide for our daily needs not wants. What is it that we want that God cannot do for us? With Him the word impossibility ceases to exist. He is the Way we must follow; the Truth we must believe and the Life that gives us life. With just a word we are set free from whatever ails us. He says that healing is the children’s bread. When he enters into your life, every situation changes for the better. The God that says what He will do. He says he will turn every curse to a blessing. He is the same yesterday; today and forever. He says: “I know you all by name.” When you have such a father like that, why then do you have a reason to worry? All he demands from us in return for everything he has done is a worthy sacrifice of praise. Is that too much to ask from his creatures?
He implores us to draw closer to him in prayer. He stretches out his hands and invites us to share in his eternal banquet. He invites us to willingly drop our burdens at his feet and pick up His yoke. He says His grace is abundant and His mercies ever new. He asks us if anything is impossible for Him to do. He begs us to drop all our cares and worries at the foot of the cross. And it’s wonderful to have a father who is willing to do all this and more if we could just humble ourselves and talk to him; not mere talking but real communication, the kind where we talk to God and listen to him as he speaks to us. Through Christ, in Christ and with Christ we can do all things. He is our All in all things. He alone is enough.
I also just watched the video of a song titled “Mercy said no”. It was heart breaking and tears freely flowed through my eyes. He bore all the pain of the cross for my sake and yours. The unblemished one went the way of the cross for me and you. He was flogged for our sins. The wording of a song comes back to me now and I’m sure it’s somewhere in the bible and I will share it now with you all: “Surely he has borne our grief and carried our iniquities, the chastisement for our peace was upon him and by stripes we are healed. What can I render to the Lord for his mercies, what I can render to the Lord for his goodness? Love is the ultimate, love is the greatest, love made Jesus to die on the cross.”
He came down to earth out of love for sinful mankind and in Philippians2 vs. 8, it says He humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross. On the cross Jesus said:”it is finished”. Every of our pains and sicknesses is finished. He paid the eternal price for our sins. In the time of Jesus; to die on a cross was considered shameful but then he still did it for me and for you. He died a shameful death for every one of us and the only we often repay him is by offending him even more. Do you know what sin is, it’s more than just offending God; it’s telling God that the sacrifice of His Dearly beloved Son as it’s says in John3:16 was a waste, it’s telling Jesus to go back to Calvary and die again, and it’s nailing Him to the cross again and again and once more exposing Him to public shame. Sin is an act of disobedience by a creature who rejects, at least implicitly, the very One from whom he came and who sustains him in life.
I read something in the bible that struck a chord in me and it is the book of Proverbs 20 vs. 30 and it says: “Sometimes it takes a painful experience, to make us change our ways.” Do we wait until something painful happens before we turn back to our creator? Do we keep ignoring his warnings and rejecting Him at every twist and turn, only to turn back to HIM when the world has failed us.
I happen to be the worst sinner and I will be the first to condemn myself. It is always the things we count as inconsequential that are the things that really matter. Close your eyes for one short moment and picture yourself as God would see you now, then ask yourself this question: would God be pleased? When I was a child, my mother bought me this book titled “what would Jesus do?” it paints a picture where you are to judge every of your actions by what Jesus would do if He were in that particular situation.
I hope this article touches your life and makes you reconsider again. It is not easy to say no to sin, we are often swayed by temptations but then in the midst of our fall from grace, I hope we can find the throne of mercy and pick ourselves up and ask God for forgiveness. I also remember a prayer that goes like this: “ I love you Lord my God above all things; I repent with my whole heart of having offended thee, never permit me to separate myself from thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always and then do with me whatever Thou will.” I hope that most people learn that God gives us a chance to change our ways. No matter how many times you fall, He is willing to pick you up. He says in Ephesians 2 vs. 4: “But God’s mercy is so abundant and His love for us is so great.” He implores us to draw closer to him in prayer.
All I want you to do is a take a moment and reflect on your life. How many times do we forget to thank God for the many things He has done for us instead of complaining about the ones He has not done for us. The Igbo’s have a saying that is loosely translated as:”if someone praises a mighty one for the ones he has done, he will do more.” It is about learning to thank God for all the little things He has done for us, appreciating the fact that He made us to be alive today. It’s not enough having all the riches the world can hold, it’s about the people whose faces you have put a smile on. It is about those whose lives you touch with just a word or a little action of yours, it’s about that poor person who smiles whenever he sees you, it’s about the little things to you can do to make that corner of the world a better place for everyone to live in. Your life, my life is about making a difference, creating changes, being agents of goodness and spreading happiness wherever we go. That my friend is what living a truly happy and fulfilled life means!!!
I take the journey to knowing God more every day. It’s not easy but then I ask for His grace and I know He is able to do more than I can ever imagine.
